Gezichtsmasker - Basikasingo - Democratische Republike Congo
2e helft 20e eeuw - Vintage - gebruikt met zichtbare tekenen van slijtage

Face mask - Basikasingo - Congo.
Origin: collected in situ.
Size: 39 x 22 cm.
Material: wood.

This African mask features the stylistic characteristics of the Sikasingo masks in Congo. Stretched out and expressive face, simple and geometric features (reminding of the Songye Kifwebe masks), fine notching around the edge.
According to all of the traditions of this region, different groups of hunters, coming from the north, the south and the southwest, have settled in this region a long time before the Bembe and the Lega did, this is the reason why Biebuyck had designated them under the term of ‘pre-Bembe’. Although the Bembe vow a cult to the ancestors from whom they keep the symbols in small sanctuaries, just like the “pre-Bembe”, the first ones only have little carved figurines of ancestors, unlike the Basikasingo, where each chief owns several effigies of his masculine and feminine ancestors.
The term Basikasingo is an ethnonym, artificially created during the colonial period, referring to little heterogeneous groups spread out on the territory of the Bembe, in the region of Fizi, located between the Luama River and the western shore of the Tanganyika Lake.
