Omschrijving
La serie completa di 24 acqueforti - da Jacques Callot (1592-1635) - "Balli di Sfessania"
Ets - XVII sec. - orig. 1622

Complete set of 24 etchings. Excellent prints on thin laid paper, trimmed just along the copper impression; some sheets also bear a watermark. In very good condition (see photos).
On the title page is the title: ‘Balli di Sfessania di Jacomo Callot’; further down on the left: ‘Jac. Callot In.’ and ‘Inventor’. Despite this, the engravings differ from those of the original series only due to the lack of numbers.
A series made by an anonymous engraver, probably in the 17th century, from the original works engraved by Callot between 1621 and 1622.
These are portraits of characters from the ‘Balli di Sfessania’, dances that developed in Naples and Campania between the 16th and 17th centuries and were exported to other regions as part of carnival and theatre events by the actors of the Commedia dell'Arte, becoming famous worldwide. The series made by Callot was immediately an enormous success, as evidenced by the numerous copies that from the very beginning started to circulate throughout Europe.
Meaume, 641-664. Lieure, 379-402.
