Former Belgian collection.

The first African Luba rattles appeared in publications of the 1950s-1970s. The latter were used within the Bagabo society.
Other experts believe that rattles were used during rituals related to the cult of ancestors, associated to these sculptures. These pieces may have been used by soothsayers to invoke spirits, or to ward off evil curses during healing sessions.
The small spheres are always topped by a bust or a portrait, often feminine, in relation with the central place that women occupy within the Luba society and which is strongly reflected in the artistic corpus.
In this case, the expressive and cubist facies suggests that a strong Songye influence prevailed in the design.
