English translation of the 16th century epic poem 'Os Lusíadas' by Luís Vaz de Camões (c. 1524/5 – 1580), a work that celebrates in Homeric style the discovery of a sea route to India by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama (1469–1524). It is widely regarded as the most important work of Portuguese literature.
This 1778 English edition offered here is most notably for containing a critical attack on Adam Smith’s laissez-faire doctrines to the East India Trade in the 'Wealth of Nations' and the inclusion of an impressive folding map.
