Robert Franck obtained a scholarship in 1955 from the Guggenheim Foundation to document American civilization. He travels across the United States in an old car to meet Americans from all walks of life in the most diverse public places. The book, first published in France by Robert Delpire in 1958, was "considered sad, perverse, even subversive by the American press at the time". However, the book has become a classic in photography and critics and the public have hailed Robert Franck as a true pioneer. According to publisher Robert Delpire, "this book" will transform the history of documentary photography and the vision of America. The edition being offered here is the American edition in a reissued edition published nearly 40 years ago... Black canvas publisher's binding with tone-on-tone printed title on the cover and with silver characters on the spine with an illustrated dust jacket (a bit insolated). 84 black and white photographs, introductory text in English by Jacques Kerouac.
