Biography:

Antonio Corpora studied art at the Tunis School of Fine Arts under the direction of Jean Antoine Armand Vergeaud (1876-1949). In 1929, he exhibited his first paintings at the Tunisian Salon.
In 1930, he went to Florence to study and copy ancient paintings. In 1931, he moved to Paris where he met Alberto Giacometti. He was sensitive to the various artistic trends that abounded in France, and ventured into Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism and Abstraction. His early paintings depict still lifes, flowers and seascapes.
In 1932, he moved to Italy and settled in Rome. Making numerous round trips between Rome and Tunis, Antonio Corpora participated in the formation of the Group of Four with Moses Levy, Pierre Boucherle and Jules Lellouche, a group that constituted, after the war, the future Tunisian artistic movement post-colonial Tunis School.
During World War II, Corpora took refuge in his hometown of Tunis. After the war, he joined the neo-Cubist art movement in Rome and then the Fronte nuovo delle arti. He participated in the 26th Venice Biennale. In 1948, he focused on abstract art and expressionism.
In 1975, Antonio Corpora worked on rough canvases with plaster of Paris and sand, which he coated with moving colours. Later, he returned to compositions with strips of colour. Corpora exhibited four times at the Venice Biennale between 1948 and 1956. In 1968, he exhibited at both the Venice Biennale and the Rome Biennale and won both prizes for both biennials.
Antonio Corpora's main works are kept in many modern art museums, notably in Rome, Trieste, Paris, Sao Paulo, New York, Pittsburgh, Hamburg and Stockholm.
