British artist Cosmo Sarson most notably gained international press in 2013 with his giant 28ft high mural of ‘Breakdancing Jesus’ painted opposite Banksy’s iconic ‘Mild,Mild West’ in Bristol. An earlier painting on the same theme, of Jesus breakdancing in front of an applauding audience of cardinals went viral a year earlier with demand crashing his website and still remains a popular internet meme to this day.
Cosmo Sarson studied Fine Art at The Byam Shaw School of Art where he was mentored by one of Britains finest contemporary painters, Peter Doig.
Working traditionally in oil on canvas, with a nod to his graffiti and hip hop back ground growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80s, his early work documented the youth culture of his time, breakdancing, skateboarding, bmx and extreme sports.
His current output retains the same streetwise sensibilities but explores biblical themes and greek mythology, often juxtaposed against settings of urban decay. Cosmo’s most recent paintings have directly referenced Caravaggio, Velasquez and Francis Bacon in his postmodern take on neoclassical painting.
Cosmo’s interest in graffiti hasn’t waned since childhood and he continues to be an active member of the British street art scene, appearing in several books on the subject and painting at paint jams around the country. He has exhibited both nationally and overseas including the Saatchi gallery and Miami Scope Art fair.
