At auction an important painting as ‘Circle of Guillaume Courtois / Guglielmo Cortesi (Saint-Hippolyte, 1628 – Rome, 15th June 1679)’ also called ‘BORGOGNONE’, the battle painter.
However, this painting also appears in the catalogue of an important international auction (please see attached photos) as authentic by the painter.
Remarkable size, canvas only: 76 x 118 cm
Preserved in fairly good condition, the painting was restored in the 1990s.
Frame is old but not antique, probably from the mid-20th century.
Please note the frame had some deficiencies that were restored, as shown in photos.
The quality of this painting is very high, certainly studied and made by a great master.
Please note the perfect perspective, where the scene is divided on three levels: the first level concerns horses and knights in the foreground, with weapons and people on the ground. The second level takes us on the real battlefield, where we can see the true clash between parties, with weapons, horses, cannons, soldiers and cavalry. The third level is in the distance, where we can see ruins, a castle, smoke, etc.
Everything is perfectly studied and made with the utmost care and attention to the smallest details.
A very rich scene, a painting worthy of a great master.
