Monk's work takes every building on Sunset Strip as its inspiration. There are stylistic elements of Ruscha's work - the black and white photographs, the way Ruscha chose to photograph the street - but the main purpose of Monk's work is precisely what Ruscha chose to ignore. Instead of literally photographing the façade, Monk chose to photograph the spaces between the buildings on Sunset Strip.
By systematically photographing what Ruscha has omitted, Monk draws the artist's attention, and the artist's power over the interpretation of a subject. In doing so, the viewer is invited to question the veracity of Ruscha's interpretation and the choices he made in excluding some elements.
