Masker - Hout - Ngil - West-Afrika

Omschrijving
Masker - Hout - Ngil - West-Afrika
1e helft 20e eeuw - Goed

The mask is made from wood and painted with kaolin. Is has a minimalistic design which is typical for these kind of masks.

The Fangs are in West-Africa a widespread ethnical group, that primarily live in Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and - in small groups - in southern Cameroon.
These masks were worn by members of the Ngil society at the initiation of new members and at the prosecution of criminals. In addition the wearers would thereby wear raffia costumes.

The mask is painted white, which represents the symbolism of the death and the power of the ancestors.

The mask has patine and is in used but decent condition (see pictures).
