Italy - Kingdom of the Two Sicilies - Banknote of the Royal Finances, 100 francs - Issued for the siege of Gaeta, 1860.

The last public loan of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was issued in Gaeta in 1860. On 10 October 1860, the Royal Finances of king Francis II issued a loan of five million ducats to look for funds needed for defence costs. He was forced to issue government bonds that would allow him to withstand the devastating siege of the Piedmont forces. Then as now, public debt is a completely natural fact for a sovereign state. But when it comes to official acts issued in Gaeta by King Francis II in the months of the siege, everything is different. Documents like this are very important to retrace one of the most famous war stories of the Risorgimento, yet still to be fully discovered. On October 20, the security was issued during the siege of Gaeta in folders with coupons in francs, which at that historical moment was more stable and easier to sell abroad.
The 5 million ducats (approx. 21 million francs) were difficult to sell in that period because of the ongoing war.
