A remarkable French atlas of the romantic period gathering 100 maps mounted on tabs : engraved title page, 86 maps of various parts of France on double pages, a collection of maps on double pages (Algeria, island of La Reunion, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Senegal, Madagascar, Terra Nova, French Guiana, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Europe, Africa, South America, North America with Texas and California not belonging to United States, Asia, Oceania and Australia), a large fold-out map of France and a fold-out world map.
The extraordinary particularity of these maps is the illustrated scenery framing each map. Maps are steel engraved plates single sided (reverse is blank). They are printed with greatest care offering a great accuracy of lines. It is not exaggerated to write that each map is a true piece of art. The one with Napoleon on Corsica is particularly beautiful. Size of most the maps is 50 x 37 cm, 20 x 15 inches. All the maps are hand colored with great care using various inks; the result is beautiful in an aesthetic meaning.
The atlas is bound with green calf and embedded paper, gilt title on the back and gilt title in a romantic frame on front cover, gilt filets, marbled end-paper.
Good overall condition, cover is rubbed an slightly worn, a head is broken, other defects are minor, inner condition is mint.
