Hunting captainships were created in the 16th century. Francis I established, in the vicinity of his residences, hunting reserves which were each placed under the supervision of a hunting captain who were given the name captainship. Like feudal garrisons, they covered an often very large territory, all parts of which were subject to the most vexatious servitudes: owners or farmers could not kill the slightest game, even to protect their crops; they could not cut coppices before ten years of cutting and regrowth, nor mow meadows before certain seasons; they were sometimes forbidden to build, make enclosures or ditches, etc. The duties of captain of the hunts were sometimes assigned to the captain-governor of the royal residence.
The captaincies multiplied in an abusive way during the course of the 17th century.
As a result of repeated complaints from rural dwellers, eighty captainships of the crown were abolished.
