M. Lind & M. Boerhaave - Traité du Scorbut - 1756
Geneeskunde - Aantal: 1 - Boek

A lovely book. James Lind (1716-1794), born in Edinburgh, is considered a pioneer of naval hygiene.
He was a surgeon in the navy at the time. Here he reports on his remarkable clinical experimentation, with the first scientifically controlled therapeutic trial (six groups of two patients receiving different treatments). He demonstrates the effectiveness of fresh lemon and orange juice in preventing disease (already suspected by some authors), and thus the deficiency nature of scurvy.
The provision of citrus fruits was eventually adopted by the Royal Navy in the late 18th century and by France in 1856, leading to the eradication of the disease.

A lovely French first edition, translated by Thomas Carrère.
