Unique Gresikan statue depicting the Hindu god Shiva Nataraja, Lord of the Dance. Cast in bronze in the early 19th century on Java, Indonesia.
This four-armed Shiva dances on top of the demon Apasmarapurusha while trampling him. The demon holds a snake in his hands. On the left side of Shiva Nataraja stands his consort Parvati with in her left hand the stem of a long lotus. Behind Shiva Nataraja a round flaming halo is depicted.
Gresikan sculptures were made on Java by non-Hindus. Therefore the iconography often differs from the original images in India, but this Shiva Nataraja follows most of the characteristics of a Shiva image from India.
The statue is 20 centimetres high and weighs 667 grams.
