First edition, published in 1730, title age adorned with Charles de Caylus’s coat of arms. Period full calfskin with smooth spine and yellow edges. A fairly well-preserved copy: Rubbing from use to the headcaps, tailcaps, and spine. The hing is a little loose. Fairly fresh interior with some light foxing. Handwritten annotations in the margins.


Charles de Caylus, born on April 20, 1669 in Paris, died April 3, 1754 near Auxerre, and a French 17th-18th century churchman. He was bishop of Auxerre from 1704 until his death at the age of 85. Exiled to his diocese for a time because of his Jansenist views, he profoundly transformed it into a bastion of Jansenism.
