Bordmasker koppel Igbo - Hout - Nigeria

Omschrijving
Bordmasker koppel Igbo - Hout - Nigeria
Goed

The Igbo (or Ibo) form one of the major ethnic groups of Nigeria, where they constitute around eighteen per cent of the population. They mainly live in the southeastern part of the country (limited by the Benue River and the Niger River in the west), but also form an important part of the population of two main cities of the country: Lagos in the west and Kano in the north. They speak the Igbo language and its various dialects.

One of the main characteristics of Igbo masks is that these are painted in a white colour, the spirit’s colour (Mmwo). One of the most famous masks among spirit masks is the Agbogho (woman) Mmuo or Mmwo (spirit), enabling the Igbo to conceptualise a certain idea of the ideal young woman. The mask is worn by a man and is danced during crops or sowing festivities, but also during funerals of important persons.
