Figuur/beeld - Hout - Igbo - Nigeria

Omschrijving
Figuur/beeld - Hout - Igbo - Nigeria
Eind 19e eeuw - Goed

Igbo or Ibo are one of Africa’s largest ethnic groups, with a total of about 30 million people. In Nigeria, they make up about 17% of the population. They speak the Igbo language, which is the main language in Nigeria. The social organisation of the Igbo people, before European colonisation, was based on semi-autonomous communities organised by an Assembly of ordinary people.

Two-toned figurine of a warrior made of compact wood. Hairstyle, chequered armour, shoes and bracelets are darker than the rest of the ochre body. The arms are bent and the hands seem to carry something or, read together with the open mouth and the teeth in evidence and the half-closed eyes, let us think about a moment of prayer or supplication. Original patina, never restored. In good condition, except for normal signs of wear, age and use.
