These masks were used by the male NGIL society that no longer exists today. This secret society was responsible for the initiation and they fought against witchcraft. The Ngil had a ritual purifying fire symbolized by the gorilla.
Holders of these masks were visible at night in the villages, lit by torches, and were always in large numbers.
This society also had a judicial function and identified the guilty of misconduct in the village.
