Campo del Cielo Ijzeren meteoriet - 80 g
Field of Heaven, Argentinië

Complete piece of great beauty, with a number of regmaglypts.

Iron meteorites are composed mainly of iron and nickel.
Actually, they are a piece of an asteroid core. In the differentiation process, when the asteroid is a ball of magma, during its formation, iron and nickel settle to the core of the asteroid, as they are the heaviest elements. After cooling, the asteroid metal core is formed. Through catastrophic collisions, the asteroid and its core break and the fragments remain in space, until a piece falls into our planet. They are estimated to account for 5.7% of falls.

The impact took place around 4,500 years ago. Most of the fragments fell on a narrow strip of land of several square kilometres which is now known as the ‘Campo del Cielo’ meteorite field.

The impact left at least 26 craters in a 3 kilometres wide and 18.5 kilometres long area. It is estimated that meteorites hit the Earth surface at about 14,400 kilometres per hour.

At Expometeoritos, we take care of dissemination, talks, workshops, analysis, classification and exhibitions of meteorites.
