Walter Gotschke was born on 14 October 1912 in Bennisch, Kreis Freudenthal, in what was then Austrian-Silesia, which belonged to the newly formed Czechoslovakia in 1918 after the lost First World War. From an early age, he was obsessed with drawing the animals of his rural environment, from his 11th year. The automobiles of the early days, which he saw. Between 1928 and 1932 Gotschke studied architecture, civil engineering and engineering at the School of Building Engineering in Brno, where the first Masaryk Grand Prix took place in 1930. For the next year's race in 1931, he won the poster competition advertised by the Czech Automobile Club. Gotschke now had free access to all race events taking place with the club tie.
His sketches of these races were published in the daily newspaper.
