Mask (1) - Wood - Baréké (or Batéké) - Gabon
This mask is a plank mask: the wearer of this piece would maintain it with the teeth, biting into a braided ribbon. Some masks have perforations which served to tie the feathers and fibres, to bring the costume to perfect harmony. Bateke masks are still crafted on the same manner: these are circular, divided horizontally by a band, and their surface is ornamented with geometric motifs which were painted with white, blue and brown pigments.
