A magnificent 19th century French so called "rat de cave" cellar candlestick. An exceptionally beautiful piece made of gilt bronze with a stunning design of a branch shaped handle, realistic leaves and rocailles enclosing a flower shaped capital.
Cellar candlesticks were popular as they allowed a more stable grip but they were mostly simple household items. Spectacular pieces like this one, made of finely cast gilt bronze with an elaborate design, are very rare and would have only been available to the wealthiest clients.
6,5 cm high
13,5 cm wide, 11 cm deep
Overall very good condition with small imperfections, wear and oxidation consistent with age. A true little masterpiece that could become a real jewel of any collection or interior.
