Erwin de Vries, born on 21 December 1929 in Paramaribo (Dutch Guiana, now Suriname) and died on 31 January 2018 in the same town, was a Surinamese painter and sculptor, considered the "godfather of modern Surinamese art".
He was the half-brother of Henry Lucien de Vries, who was the penultimate governor-general of Dutch Guiana, and studied in the Netherlands with Ossip Zadkine. His work have notably been exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum and the Nationaal Monument Slavernijverleden in Amsterdam, as well as in Jamaica.
