Mercury or Hermes, with winged feet

In Greek mythology Mercury, or Hermes, was the son of Jupiter and the nymph Maia, the messenger of the Gods, the protector of travels and travellers, of communication, of divination and carrier of dreams.

Hermes was also a God of borders, pastors, orators and poets, literature, athletics, weights and measures, and commerce.

Hermes also served as an interpreter, as a messenger of the Gods to men, a task he shared with the Goddess Iris. From Hermes comes the word ‘hermeneutics’, the art of interpreting hidden meanings.
